How we can support your journey

Choosing to study abroad

Where to start?

How you prepare for an international education will depend on what you study, where you study, and what kind of university you attend. Start by first understanding your reasons for studying abroad. Perhaps you want to:

  • Experience a different culture
  • Attend a particular school or university
  • Get a job in a specific industry, country or region
  • Be close to family or friends abroad

Explore some options that fit your criteria and start working toward them. HSBC Jade clients or Premier customers can talk to our professional education consultants for guidance through the process to study abroad, from researching schools to enrollment.

What will it cost to study abroad?

The Value of Education: The price of success study by HSBC found that, on average, students spend USD99,000 over the course of their degree. Almost half of the parents who contributed to their child's education and participated in the study said they wished they'd started saving earlier.

You may have saving goals, an investment plan, or are planning to borrow money. Scholarships and bursaries can also help students fund their own education. As well as cost, some things to consider when preparing to study abroad include courses offered, visa requirements, language barriers, proximity to your home country, and future opportunities.

Preparing to move

Passport, visa, shipping – there's a list of things to work through in preparation for a move overseas.

We've created a series of student checklists to ensure you have everything you need before you move abroad.

Opening an account

As international banking specialists, we're committed to making your move less stressful. We have a dedicated account opening team that can help open accounts both at home and overseas before departure. Alternatively, if you're moving with your children to the new destination and would like to open an account after you land, we can help you make an appointment at your preferred branch before you go. Simply request a call back and we'll get in touch with you.

Sending money

There are different ways of transferring money, depending on the type of account your child opens. With an international account, they can manage multiple currencies in one account, and you can use international money transfers.
